Echo # 5 is unframed on 40 x 40 cm deep canvas with white painted sides. It has a reflective blue centre made up of numerous layers of acrylic paint and tiny glass beads are distributed across the surface. The remainder of the painting is created by repeated brush marks of thick oil paint worked wet in wet. Echo # 5 plays with ideas of surface, skin, mirrors and reflections. It abstracts from and makes reference to Baroque painting. It uses visual metaphors to elude what might have been an expected classical narrative but also to provoke or resuscitate other meanings and connections. Subtle asymmetries and near symmetries underpin the structure of the painting whilst suggesting a reflected image. Echo refers obliquely to the Greek nymph who loved Narcissus, but here she may be contradictory and critically retroactive through subtle changes. It is intended that the painting appears different in different lighting conditions and therefore one photograph cannot reproduce all its effects however this image is a fair reproduction in basic daylight.
